The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) provides all children in Sumter County Primary, Sumter County Elementary, Sarah Cobb Elementary, and Cherokee Elementary School with a variety of free fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the school day. Teachers may have a serving because they are acting as role-models to the children. It is an effective and creative way of introducing fresh fruits and vegetables as healthy snack options.
The FFVP also helps create healthier school environments by providing healthier food choices. The goals of the program are to:

  •   Expand the variety of fruits and vegetables children experience
  •   Increase children's fruit and vegetable consumption
  •   Make a difference in children's diets to impact their present and future health
  •   Serve a FFVP snack during the instructional day. (Teachers are encouraged to use the several minutes to incorporate other areas of academics using the snack food.)

This program is seen as an important catalyst for change in efforts to combat childhood obesity by helping children learn more healthful eating habits. The FFVP introduces school children to a variety of produce that they otherwise might not have had the opportunity to sample.
To be selected for the FFVP, a school must be an elementary schools, be more than 50% free or reduced eligible, participate in the National School Lunch Program, and complete the application.
The focus of the FFVP is to bring fresh produce into the school for distribution to children. For too many children, the produce they see in school might be their first exposure to fresh fruits and vegetables, and the only ones they see that day. That is why nutrition education is critical to the program's success.
Providing nutrition education can also help schools reach their goal of a healthier school environment and is a component of several important agency programs and initiatives such as:

  •   A school's Wellness Policy
  •   Becoming a Team Nutrition School
  •   Meeting the HealthierUS School Challenge
