SUMTER COUNTY SCHOOLS CAPTURE AWARDS AT ODYSSEY OF THE MIND REGIONAL COMPETITION
For months, over 300 Odyssey of the Mind teams, throughout Georgia, have been preparing for their display of creative problem-solving solutions at Regional Tournaments. In Savannah, Flowery Branch and Lilburn, these teams have met to present winning solutions for one of five problems. Two teams, one from Sumter County Middle School, and one team from Sumter County Elementary, will advance to the State Finals Tournament at Columbus State University, on April 14, 2012. For eight of the past 10 years, regional winners from Sumter County Schools have advanced as state winners, in their respective division and problem, to World Finals Competition. Will either or both of these teams continue this winning tradition?

The team from Sumter County Elementary, coached by 4th grade teacher, Mr. Daniel Carpenter, won first place with their problem, "Weird Science," in Division 1. Scoring by this team set the parameters for other teams in this division. Out of 18 teams, the team from Sumter County Elementary, attained the top score for Long Term problem solution and received a supportive score in Spontaneous solution, a critical part of the composite score for each team. For three consecutive years, a team from Sumter County Elementary has won first place in their problem solution. The teams from Sumter County Middle Schools are coached by a first-time coach, Mr. James Beckett. Beckett is quiet supportive of the avenue of learning that Odyssey of The Mind encourages for team partnership and creativity.

Before the scores were announced at the end of the long day, Sumter County Elementary was awarded an OMER Award, the second highest award for an Odyssey of the Mind team. The award is presented for exceptional team work and creativity. In their Long-Term Team Award nomination, a portion of the script read, "the critics 'raved,' the audience 'cheered,' and the Judging Team laughed continuously as this team carried us on their journey. With a witty dialogue, some awesome props, and some 'cool' technical elementary, we enjoyed our day with a team that EPITOMIZED the OMER experience of fun, creative, problem solving."

Here, a large delegation of students from Sumter Count Elementary and Sumter County Middle School, along with parents and supporters from Sumter County, gather before the set of SC Elementary at the conclusion of their 8 minute display of creative talent to judges.  The pink shirts were worn by both teams, coaches and all family members to let everyone know they were all from Sumter County!
