STUDENTS HASTEN TO REVIEW OVER 90 PROJECTS
2012 SCIENCE FAIR AT AMERICUS-SUMTER HIGH SCHOOL SOUTH CAMPUS The Americus-Sumter High South Campus Science Fair was held on January 13, 2012 in the ASHS Gym with much fanfare. There were 90 projects exhibited by students from 10th grade to 12th grades. Students from Sumter Middle School also participated. The projects covered different categories: Animal Sciences, Behavior and Social Sciences, Biochemistry, Cellular and Microbiology, Chemistry, Earth and Planetary Science, Energy and Planetary Sciences, Energy and Transportation, Environmental Management, Environmental Sciences, Medicine and Health Sciences, Microbiology, Physics and Astronomy and Plant Sciences. The Students developed an interest and understanding in knowing Scientific method. The Students demonstrated the highest order of Bloom’s taxonomy—Skill in scientific methods. The process began when Research paper in each core subject became mandatory for students. The Science department came up with a rubric to analyze each student’s projects. They gave an outline for students to incorporate the following components in their Science Fair Project: Question/problem, Research, Hypothesis, Materials, Procedure, Results, Conclusion, Visual Display, Logbook and on time Presentation. Some of the interesting projects were – Can Egg Shells decalcify like our bones?, Magnetism: Future Source of Energy, Does antibacterial hand soap kill more?, A Teenage Epidemic, Optical Illusions, Clean Water! Clear Choice!, Texting While Driving!, Stay Awake for God’s sake,! Teenage Drinking and Driving, Which common materials produce the worst earth/air pollution when burned?, Multitasking: Does Cell Phone use Affect Performance?, What causes individuals to have diabetes?, Self Esteem and sports, Balsa wood construction, Chicken or cow?, When Shake won’t take! The Science department thanks all the administrators, teachers and all who were responsible for making the Science fair a success. Thus, the ASHS Science Fair Students proved that hands-on activities can bring innovations to the Scientific World! Go Panthers! Here, Americus-Sumter High students hasten to review over 90 science fair projects.
