SCHOOL/COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP OBTAINS REFRIGERATOR FOR SUMTER COUNTY PRIMARY SCHOOL
DONATED REFRIGERATOR PLACED IN SUMTER COUNTY PRIMARY
SCHOOL/COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP OBTAINS REFRIGERATOR FOR SUMTER COUNTY PRIMARY SCHOOL Annually, the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) at Sumter County Primary School conducts many projects to help teachers and staff. At the end of last school year, PTO President, Mrs. Madeline Campbell, learned that the refrigerator at SCPS was not working properly. She began discovering alternatives to get the teachers and staff a new refrigerator. When the project was discussed with SCPS Principal, Mrs. Cindy Hughes, at the beginning of this year, Mrs. Campbell was told that the old refrigerator was moved because it was leaking water. She volunteered to Mrs. Hughes that the PTO was going to try to get them a new refrigerator. As Mrs. Campbell shared the project with the PTO, they decided the first doughnut fund raiser for this school year would go to buying this new refrigerator. With teamwork, enough money was raised. During the process, a local citizen learned of the mission and donated a "gently-used" refrigerator to the school. He was happy to give the refrigerator to Sumter County Primary School. Excited with the offer, contact was made with several friends in an effort to have the side-by-side appliance moved. Mrs. Campbell talked with Mr. Billy Thompkins, Director of Maintenance and Grounds of Sumter County Schools concerning the project. Mr. Thompkins made arrangement for transfer of the appliance. "We are all glad that this community and school partnership project has been completed. The refrigerator now awaits transfer to the appropriate room for teacher and staff use," said Mrs. Campbell.
Sumter County Primary PTO has agreed that the mission of the organization is to help the teachers, staff and students at the school. The many fundraisers help to send students on their popular fine-arts-filled overnight to Atlanta at the end of the school year. Also, the funds purchased clothing for the school's clothes closet. Last year, the PTO was very involved in the beautification project of the school grounds. Money was donated for purchase of plants and trees needed for the projects initial installation. "We monitor the school's needs and try to help as we can," said Mrs. Campbell.
Here, members of the grounds crew and custodial staff of Sumter County Primary find a home for the new refrigerator for use by the faculty and staff of Sumter County Primary. From left, Mr. Edward Tootes, Mr. Johnny Gaines, Mr. Williams Wells, Mr. Eddie Lawson and Mr. Tyrone Johnson, work to place and prepare the donated appliance.
