SUMTER COUNTY ELEMENTARY HAS NEW FIFTH GRADE BAND

This year at SCES, fifth grade students have the opportunity to join SCES Beginner Band. This is the first year that SCES has been able to offer an instrumental program to students. “The response has been excellent,” says Ms. Nichols. “We have over 30 students participating in the program. This year students were able to choose between trumpet, flute, clarinet or bell kit. I’ve also selected students to play bass guitar, bass drum and snare drum in order to balance the band. We got to play our first notes together as a band last week, and the band has a great sound," continued Ms. Nichols.

Students attend a weekly lesson during their exploratory time. After Christmas, the students will start practicing together as a band on a weekly basis. Ms. Nichols plans to feature the SCES Beginner Band students at the Christmas PTO program in December and again in a concert in the spring. “Band is a great activity for students,” says Ms. Nichols. “It promotes cooperation, increases concentration and builds self-esteem. Educational research shows that students who participate in band achieve high scores on standardized tests.”
