SCES STUDENTS ENJOY CAREER DAY
Sumter County Elementary School hosted its first Career Day on September 9, 2011, for 5th grade students. The goal was to expose the students to a wide spectrum of career choices and options. It was also an opportunity to reinforce the mission of Sumter County Schools to graduate all students. Many community members participated in the program. The presenters were knowledgeable, informative, and are considered experts in their field. Students were given the chance to ask questions and participate in demonstrations. The principal, Mrs. Sharron Marcus, said, "This world-class event helped our students bridge the gap between what they are learning now and the future. The experts all shared how what the students are learning now in the 5th grade will make it possible for them to choose the careers represented in the future. All of the presenters were able to make connections between their careers and math, reading, and science.

The presenters included: Cosmetologist - Ms. Dorethea McKenzie, Active U.S. Marine - Mr. Trey Temples, Orthodontist - Dr. Robert Moss, Veterinarian - Mr. Samuel Harper, Store Managers - Mr. Mike Crawford and Mr. Robert Harvey, Bank President and Mayor - Mr. Barry Blount, Sumter County Sheriff's Officers - Captain Don Mason and Deputy David Johnson, Aviation and Aeronautics Specialist - Mr. Mike Cochran, and Motor Sports Vehicle Driver - Mr. Kevin Beaver. The students were polled to determine careers of interest. All fifth graders were invited to wear career attire as an opportunity to Dress for Success. Counselors Mrs. Connie Downs and Mrs. Tawana Bettis planned the event.    The next Career Day will be in November for fourth grade students.
