DEBORAH HUMPHREYS OF CHEROKEE ELEMENTARY IS TEACHER OF THE MONTH WITH SUMTER COUNTY SCHOOLS As part of the growing recognition program of all teachers and staff of Sumter County Schools, each month, school principals nominate an outstanding teacher from their respective school. Three local judges then review applications from the various candidates.

Criteria differ among lower grades and high school. Primarily, teacher attendance, punctuality, implementation of the Georgia Standards Based curriculum, administrative observation and involvement in peer leadership, are considered for selection.

Members of the Partners in Education program reward selected teachers each month. In recent months, Shiver Lumber Company and The Americus Times Recorder have presented $25 gift certificates to winners. For the month of October, 2010, Belk department store supported the Teacher of the Month program with a $25 holiday gift card.

Here, Mrs. Deborah Humphreys, Counselor at Cherokee Elementary School, third from left, receives her gift card from Belk Manager, Mr. Travis Williams. She is supported by Dr. Wanda Jackson, Principal of Cherokee, at left, and Dr. Roy Brooks, Superintendent of Sumter County Schools, at right.
