HONORS DAY 2012 SHARES STUDENT GREATNESS AT AMERICUS-SUMTER SOUTH CAMPUS
Again, the gymnasium was filled with excitement as students from Americus-Sumter High South Campus celebrated the many honors of their peers at Honors Day 2012.

The procession of 33 Honor Graduates set the pace for the day as 31 teachers, organization advisers and community stakeholders read the names of over 100 students with diversified high school honors and successes.

Academic successes began the program as each Department of the High School saluted top students. Beta Club Seniors and National Honor Society recipients were then recognized. Throughout the program scholarship recipients from many universities and colleges were announced. Representatives from the armed forces and Georgia Southwestern State University presented scholarships and recognized students enrolled with the Dual Enrollment Program at South Georgia Technical College. Attending the celebration was Dr. John Watford, Vice-President of Academic Affairs for SGTC. Over 300 students had entered their names for a drawing for an IPod Shuffle by Dr. Watford. Before the celebration, Dr. Watford had told his daughter, Lacey, that if her name was drawn, she would not get the Ipod prize. Dr. Watford asked another stage adult to select the winning name and Lacey's name was selected. She did not receive the Ipod Shuffle! Another name was drawn.

Near the end of the program, students with perfect scores on the Georgia High School Graduation Test and the End of Course Test were recognized. The Teacher of the Year and the Star Student/Teacher of the Year were also recognized. The Top Scholars and the Class of 2012 Scholarship Offers continued to be shared with students. As at the beginning of the Honors Day Celebration, the 33 Honor Graduates were recognized and presented their Honor Graduate Gold Stoles and Medals to be worn at their graduation on Friday, May 25th at 7 p.m. at Finklea Robinson Field.

To close the recognition of greatness at Americus-Sumter High School, the Salutatorian, Mr. Ducminh Nguyen and the Valedictorian, Mr. Vontravis Monts, were recognized and presented plaques for their honors. "This was a great day for Americus-Sumter High Students. These students are doing exemplary things as they enter a competitive world. I am proud of all of our students as we recognize the excellence in our student body," said Mr. Walter Knighton, Principal of Americus-Sumter High South Campus.
