SUMTER COUNTY PRIMARY WINS BEST PICTURE AWARD IN GEORGIA MOVIE ACADEMY STATE COMPETITION

Today, notice was given to Sumter County Primary School and the "Giving to Ghana
Goes Global," Georgia Movie Academy team!  This creative team was awarded the K-2 Division, 2012 State of Georgia GMA Best Picture!

Mrs. Becky Schabeck, Digital Arts/ Instructional Technology teacher for Sumter Primary, skillfully directed this team of five students as they learned about their subject and created images that would best provide their learned awareness to others. The local GMA competition was held at the Historic Rylander Theater where the student won best picture.

Following the local competition, the student's movie was sent to the State of Georgia Competition where it took first place in the K-2 division.

The students created a movie about a two year project they have been collaborating with Professor Keaton Wynn, from Georgia Southwestern State, and SCPS art teacher, Jan Alston. SCPS was asked to provide art projects for students of GSW to share with a school in Africa during their study abroad in Ghana. After their return trip, Sumter County Primary School was eager to form a partnership with The Army Basic School in Ghana, Africa. SCPS began raising funds, communicating with Ghana through Skype and email, and creating artwork to send back to Africa.

In the fall of this year, SCPS was pleased to hear that our small monetary donation was put to such good use. We received a letter from the principal of the Army Basic School letting us know that they were able to set up a computer lab and internet connectivity.

From this letter, students in the first and second grade Digital Designer’s club began to create a digital movie to showcase the collaboration between Americus, Georgia and Ghana, Africa. Please take a moment to view the students’ work at http://scps.sumterschools.org/.

A trophy will be awarded to the Digital Arts team for winning first place in the State of Georgia competition.

Sumter County Primary Digital Designer Team Members: Luke Exely, Alette De La Paz, MacKenzie Pugh, Trinity Major, Ruby Caroline Turner
