SUMTER COUNTY SCHOOLS AND WISK RADIO PARTNER FOR WEATHER RADIO DISTRIBUTION After the catastrophic tornado in 2007, informational and safety grants were offered to assist local law, schools and other organizations to apply for funds to purchase automatic weather radios.
Coach Jimmy Green, Attendance Officer for Sumter County Schools teamed with Col. Eric Bryant and Maj. Joe Monts of the Sumter County Sheriff's Department, to apply for these protective warning devices. Upon their delivery, most were distributed to requesting citizens. The radio is packaged complete with programming instructions. The few remaining radio units were stockpiled to provide later availability. Coach Green and WISK radio, a Partner in Education, are now offering the remainder of the radios to first callers and pick-up at the radio station.
"This is a great partnership with Sumter County Schools and WISK Radio. Citizen safety and awareness is our job at WISK. We hope there will not be another dangerous weather event that will cause for activation of these radios. But, they will all be distributed for maximum use," said Donnie McCrary of WISK radio.
Here, Thurston Clary, Coach Green and Donnie McCrary present the remaining weather radios for citizen's pickup.
