MS. KRISTEN WHITNEY WHITTLE IS TEACHER OF THE YEAR FOR SUMTER COUNTY SCHOOLS
The selection of Teacher of the Year from Sumter County Schools is a lengthy process. Beginning in March, the 2011 Georgia Department of Education Guidelines for TOTY were delivered to principals. Each school first selected their certified representative as Teacher of the Year. After completion of state-designed applications, final selection began. First, the 2010 Teachers of the Year read the applications and reported a numerical ranking. The top three papers then continued for reading by three community leaders, a retired board member, a retired teacher and leading stakeholder in Sumter County Schools.
At the Pope Center of South Georgia Technical College, the winning name was revealed on November 15, 2011. Each school representative was first introduced and awarded a $200 gift from Mr. Rick Whaley, CEO of Citizens Bank of Americus. Mr. Whaley then announced the Teacher of the Year for Sumter County Schools. Ms. Kristen Whittle from Sumter County Elementary was announced and received an additional $1000 check from Mr. Whaley.
Selected Teachers of the Year were: From Cherokee Elementary – Mrs. Cheryl Fletcher, from Americus-Sumter High South Campus-Mr. Coleman Price, from Sarah Cobb Elementary-Ms. Sharrie Vereen-Thomas, from Sumter County Primary, Mrs. Lisa Seeley, from Americus-Sumter North Campus- Ms. Samantha Braswell, from Sumter County Elementary-Ms. Kristen Whittle, from Staley Middle School-Mr. Martin Mitchell and from Sumter County Middle School – Mrs. Patricia Golden.
Also recognized were the Staff Members of the Year from each of eight schools. Faculty-selected were: From Americus-Sumter High North Campus-Ms. Shamona Davis, from Sumter County Primary-Mr. Eddie Lawson, from Sarah Cobb Elementary-Mrs. Linda Coley, from Staley Middle-Mr. Antonio Willis, from Americus-Sumter High South Campus-Mrs. Christy Landers, from Sumter County Middle School-Mr. Shernone Butts, from Sumter County Elementary – Ms. Lois Hamilton, and from Cherokee Elementary-Mrs. Sabrina Clyde. Staff Members of the Year each received a monetary gift from their principal.
Both the Teacher of the Year and Staff Member of the Year received additional product or service gifts from Sumter County businesses. Together, Citizens Bank and other businesses in Sumter County provided the meal and awards for recipients. For the celebration, retailers and supporters contributed over $4,281 for the honorees.
