STUDENTS CREATE "FACEBOOK" PROFILE AT SUMTER COUNTY MIDDLE SCHOOL
Students in Mrs. Strickland’s third period Gifted and Talented class were asked to create a fake Facebook profile for the author of a short story they recently read. They used an electronic template in Microsoft PowerPoint to fill in the information they researched about Ernesto Galarza, author of “Barrio Boy.” The story draws upon the author’s own experiences of immigrating to the United States from Mexico as a young boy. The students enjoyed using technology and social media in the classroom. Students were allowed to work independently or with a partner. Samuel Arguijo and Aurion Tommie are shown in the picture.
By creating a “fakebook” profile, the standards and elements for the project connected the classroom to the real world. The objective of the project was to analyze the characteristics of Galarza through the story plus additional research online. Students demonstrated understanding by creating status posts, a favorite books and movies section, and other elements of Facebook all based on facts about Galarza.
