SUMTER COUNTY ELEMENTARY CONTINUES LEAP MENTORING PROGRAM

Sumter County Elementary School kicked off its LEAP Mentoring Partnership Program with a successful ice cream social Thursday, September 23, 2011. LEAP is the Learning for Everyone Avenue to Progress program that matches community volunteers with students for mentoring.
The mission of the partnership between LEAP and SCES is to positively impact the life of a child by providing guidance and motivation that encourages success in all facets of life. “Often mentors follow the students when they move to the middle school,” said Mrs. Connie Downs, counselor. This commitment provides support to the students through one on one interaction.
Mentors visit the school once a week to talk, study, or just become friends with their assigned students. “This year, several of our teachers offered to serve as mentors. They devote their planning time one day each week to meet with their students,” said Mrs. Lezley Anderson, assistant principal.
