SHIRLEY WILLIAMS OF CROSSROADS ACADEMY IS FEBRUARY "TEACHER OF THE MONTH" IN SUMTER COUNTY SCHOOLS

Sumter County Schools' Superintendent, Dr. Roy Brooks, has a mission to make "Sumter County Schools one of the highest-achieving rural school districts in Georgia." As public acceptance of this mission increases, teacher and student recognition programs gain importance.

Each month, with uniform criteria, school principals recommend a teacher from their respective schools as "Teacher of the Month." After review of documents of recommendation, three local community members make the final selection for the month. For the month of February, Ms. Shirley Williams of Crossroads Academy was selected. In her recommendation, CrossRoads' Principal, Mrs. Carolyn Hamilton, wrote, "In this day and time when many teachers feel their only duty is to meet the educational needs of their students, Ms. Shirley Williams is going above and beyond. She realizes the importance of meeting each child's physical, social and economical needs. If she finds a child in need of clothing, money, or even a hair-do, she unselfishly gives of her time, talents and resources to help that child. She knows that in order for a child to do well, that child must feel good about himself or herself."

As February "Teacher of the Month," Ms. Williams received a $25 gift card from the Americus Lowe's retail store.
