AMERICUS-SUMTER HIGH SWIM TEAMS INTRODUCED AT FEBRUARY BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING
"Sumter County Schools will become one of the highest-achieving rural school districts in Georgia," is the mission statement of Superintendent Roy Brooks, Ed.D. At the February 10, 2011, meeting of the Sumter County Board of Education, Dr. Brooks continued his student and employee citations of the excellence in Sumter County Schools.

Board rooms A & B were filled with supportive parents and school staff members as Dr. Brooks presented 13 citations. The largest group to receive accolades was the 26-member Americus-Sumter High School Swim Team and their coach and school administrators. Athletic Director, Michael Pollock, led the team into the board room. "With a dominating performance at the Region 1-AAA Swimming Championship, both our girls' and boys' teams won the region championship held in January at Albany State University. The Panthers finished 1st place in 12 out of 22 events," Pollock said.

Equally proud of the academic standings of these teams, Pollock said, "The overall cumulative GPA of the team is 84.9. The graduation rate for seniors on the teams is 100%. Allen Garrett in the 200 Individual Medley and the 200 Freestyle Relay team of Allen Garrett, Oscar Chavira, John Deanon and Evan Countryman and Relay Alternate, Alex Purdy are going to state competition."

Also receiving individual citations were swim team members, Minh Nguyen and John Deanon. Minh has the highest GPA on the swim team of 98.8. She will be attending Yale University. John has the second highest GPA on the team of 95.3.

Here, the Sumter County Board of Education and Dr. Roy Brooks honor swim team members for their exemplary service in the pool and in the classroom.
