Americus, GA – WOW!  The Sumter County Schools Nutrition Program is an award winning program.  The staff members have been very busy reaching goals and attaining new heights this year.  SCS has increased professional learning while attaining knowledge to introduce new ways to increase participation and satisfaction for their customers. All SCS were represented by the cafeteria staff at the awards program.

Sumter County Middle School Cafeteria was the host for this year’s program.  It was held on May 21, 2019 beginning at 5:00 PM. After a warm welcome from Dr. Torrance Choates and a blessing, dinner was served.  There were many special guests to see the program. SCS School Board Members Ms. Alice Green, Ms. Edith Green, and Mrs. Meda Krenson were in attendance.  School principals in attendance were Dr. April Williams-Smith – SCPS, Mrs. Mae Mills – SCMS, Mrs. Cindy Anglin – ASNGA, and Mr. Kimothy Hadley – ASHS. Central Office staff supporting the Nutrition Program were Cheryl Clemons, Wanda Wilson, Pam Fields, Cheryl Fletcher, Rusha Gardner, Donald Gilman, Walter Knighton, Angela Meadows, and Natacha Merritt.  Teacher/educator supporters were recognized: Dina McCorkle – SCES and Mrs. Sheryl Rush – SCPS. Industry guests included Frankie Mathis from ACC Distributors, Lisa Bashline from PMR, Ricky and Tammy Wellons from Scoggins Produce.

SCS Local Awards were the following:  Years of Service Certificates, Perfect Attendance Certificates and $300, All 100 Health Inspections (2) for the school year, No Worker’s Compensation Claims, Sumter County School Nutrition Association officers, and a total of 26 staff members are ServSafe Certified.  SCS Nutrition Association won the Gold Scroll Awards for efforts with school nutrition activities.

Third District School Nutrition Association recognition included Mr. Larry Jackson – Public Policy and Legislation Chair, and Mrs. Diane Monts – Ways and Means Chair.  Under the leadership of Mrs. Jackson, Third District received the ALIRT award for most contacts with Georgia Senators and House members. All members of the District Association were recognized during the program; there are 48 members from SCS.  Third District Professional Educational Program (PEP) participants were recognized (21).

Georgia School Nutrition Association recognition and awards included the following:

  • Consistently High Breakfast Participation for SCPS, SCES, SCIS, SCMS, ASNGA, and FCS.  

  • Consistently High Lunch Participation for SCES, SCMS, ASNGA, ASHS, and FCS.

Other state recognitions were for training and attendance at activities in Georgia.  They were Georgia National School Lunch Week Kick-Off Luncheon, Georgia Department of Education Manager’s Conference, Georgia School Nutrition Association School Nutrition Assistant’s Program participants from SCS Cafeteria Staff.  Under the leadership of Mr. Larry Jackson, the ALIRT award was presented for most national contacts with Congress Senate and House Members and Georgia Organics Conference attendees. Members of the state association (GSNA) were asked to stand; there are 33 GSNA members from SCS.  Other Georgia awards included SCS were chosen as the Platinum Level – Golden Radish Award for 17-18. Furlow Charter School was recognized for developing a NAC (Nutrition Advisory Council).

The national organization is the American School Nutrition Association.  Sumter County Schools was well represented nationally. Mr. Larry Jackson received a scholarship to attend the Legislative Action Conference (LAC) in Washington, D. C.  Also, to be American School Nutrition Certified, staff members have to complete a designated number of training hours to remain certified each year. SCS has eight members who maintain that certification.

USDA Best Practice State Awards were presented to SCS for Program Integrity (Salary Incentive Program) and Farm to Schools Program.  USDA Best Practice Southeastern Award was presented for Program Integrity (SCS Salary Incentive Program).

Special Entertainment was provided by Ms. Shannon Gordon, a teacher at ASNGA.  She and her daughter, Faith, made beautiful music with their voices and keyboard.  Ms. Gordon taught the group an old song entitled “Bowl of Butterbeans.” Everyone was singing the chorus to, “All I want is a bowl of butterbeans”.  It was sang using the tune to “Just A Closer Walk With Thee.”

Special thanks go to Michelle Bush, SCMS Cafeteria Manager for the beautiful decorations.  Ms. Bush is always willing to make events special because of her talent for decorating and arranging flowers.

What everyone got excited about were the door prizes.  A fruit basket was donated by ACC Distributors, Gift cards from PMR and Scoggins Produce.  Pridgen Brothers supplied each participant with hand lotion/soap. Thanks go to Mrs. Cheryl Clemons for organizing the door prizes.

SCS Nutrition Program staff were very active while providing healthy, safe meals to children in Sumter County Schools.  They also enjoyed making sure all customers are satisfied; customers include teachers and school staff, parents, visitors, and the community.

A “Years of Service” certificate is presented to staff members who reach a year increment of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, etc. This is based on their starting date for complete years.

The “Perfect Attendance” Certificate is presented to staff members who are present each day to prepare and serve children meals, and for attendance at mandatory trainings.  An incentive for this is $300.
